I often get asked for beauty tips during the holidays and with Easter around the corner I thought I would share a few of my favorite holiday beauty tips.
Your average beauty column is going to be packed full of suggestions on how to look great while preparing holiday meals. I do plan on sharing some beauty secrets that will make you look fabulous while spinning multiple plates, timing everything perfectly all while entertaining guests. But I believe that the fundamental foundation of beauty is not an exterior quality. Looking great during the holidays has everything to do with the mood your wear, the expression that defines you and the height of the bounce in your step.

Cindy Jones owns Colorado Aromatics at Sagescript Institute. She also has an active blog called Sagescript Institute & Colorado Aromatics. Her story is a perfect of a mother changing her career path to spend more time with her children into a business that gives her an outlet for her passions and an income. I love that she gave up what she knew and found what she loved.
How did you get into the spa/aromatherapy/skin care/soap business?
It was rather roundabout. My background is in chemistry and microbiology and I also studied herbalism. I enjoyed doing laboratory research but it left little time for family. I had decided to do medical writing to keep me home around the kids more but missed the lab work, the people and just get bored spending too much time alone with the computer. I started teaching part time at local colleges to get me out of the house more and also started dabbling more and more every year with herbs, making presents for family and friends as most of us did. I realized it was a very creative way to use my chemistry and microbiology knowledge. I get a real rush now watching oil and water mix.

Mary Humphrey of Annie's Goat Hill Soaps has been my facebook and twitter friend for a long time. I have found through our interactions that we have alot in common. Her answers to my interview questions made me like her even more. She is not afraid of hardwork and stick-to-it-ive-ness seems to come naturally to her. Her passion for soapmaking goes into every bar she makes.
How did you get into the pat/aromatherapy/skin care/soap business?
I purchased a handmade primitive ball of soap when I was 7 years old on a school field trip. I was absolutely intrigued! I began collecting unique soap at that age, on through my teenage years. I was probably the only youngster with a box full of treasured unique soaps in her closet! I also dabbled with blending fragrances throughout my young adult life. As my interest in soap gained speed, I began purchasing handcrafted soap in a tourist town in Indiana. The soap I bought was openly stacked on an antique butcher block table in a herb shop. It was simple, not cut evenly, not labeled, but it was luxurious! I immediately noticed a change in my skin after using natural handcrafted soap.

I arrived at my last High School travel weary. The move to San Antonio my junior year in High School was simply one move too many in my teenaged opinion. I certainly let my parents know that I was not a willing participant in this move. I had dragged my feet, wailed and cried and eventually packed my bags for San Antonio.
I had moved enough to be a professional “new kid” at school. The hardest part of being new at school was always the free time in between classes and lunch period. It was the lulls between the class periods in which I perfected the art of faking it until you make it. I walked through the hallways with my head held high with great purpose in my stride.

The FDA website is full of great information. Below you will find what the FDA has to say regarding the requirement for cosmetics to have adequacy of preservation.
"Cosmetics need not be sterile, however, they must not be contaminated with microorganisms which may be pathogenic, and the density of non-pathogenic microorganisms should be low. In addition, cosmetics should remain in this condition when used by consumers. Some cosmetics, i.e., those containing more than about 10% ethanol, propylene glycol, glycerol, etc., and cosmetics in self-pressurized containers, are self-preserving and are not likely to become contaminated with microorganisms.

Lora Cantele found her calling after a car accident lead her to seek help for chronic and debilitating pain. Her story is inspiring. She is a well known leader in the aromatherapy industry as the President of the Alliance of International Aromatherapy. I have been emailing back and forth with Lora for a long time now and I took great joy in learning more about her aromatherapy story.
How did you get into the aromatherapy business?
Like many of us in this industry, I was helped by CAM (Complementary & Alternative Medicine) therapies and decided to look into it further. I was in a car accident that left me with 75% use of my back and much pain. After a year of chiropractic care, I was in another accident that left my back more debilitated and in chronic pain. I was unable to sit for longer than 5 minutes before the pain started to settle in. A friend of mine had some massage oils made up by an aromatherapist friend of his. Within 8 minutes of using the oils I was pain free!
